This tutorial requires an Intermediate knowledge of Paint Shop Pro and no outside filters are involved.
Let’s begin making the template. Since we will be working with a selection colors won’t matter:
1. Open an image of 300 X 300 pixels with a transparent background at 300 DPI for scrap kits.
2. Starting at approximately the 150 X 150 pixel center point draw out a circle selection that covers the majority of the image surface.
Selection Type = Circle
Feather = 0
Mode = Add(Shift)
Anti-Alias = Checked
3. Go to Selections > Load/Save Selection > Save Selection to Alpha Channel.
Do not deselect.
4. Going into the layers palette, rename this layer “Fill” and Save.
5. Layers > New Raster Layer
6. Rename this layer:, “Cutout” and Save.
7. Layer > New Raster Layer
8. Rename this layer, “Dome” and Save.
9. Selecting the layer named “Cutout”, go to Effects > 3D Effects > Cutout and apply the following Settings:
Vertical = -25
Horizontal = 17
Opacity =54
Blur = 62.38
Shadow = Black
Fill Interior with Color = NOT Checked
10. Selecting the “Dome” layer go to Effects > Artistic Effects > Balls & Bubbles and apply the following settings:
Single Ball or Bubble in the Shape settings
Maximum Possible Size = Checked
Surface Tab Settings:
Material = White (255,255,255)
Gloss = 20
Opacity = 0
Shininess = 30
Maps Tab Settings:
Bump Map = Not Checked
Environment Map = Christmas Ball
Opacity = 100
Illumination Tab Settings:
Ambience:
Maximum = 50
Minimum = 0
Light Properties:
Lights = Light1
Color = White
Highlight size = 30
Click OK and we are half way there!
11. By saving at this point, you have a template for a sphere that is reusable for many different kinds of projects.
Now that we have the hard part done, now we get to start the fun! Let’s Go!
12. Selecting the “Dome” and “Cutout” Layers hide each of them by clicking the eye icon beside each of them. Now select the “Fill” layer.
13. Choosing any two medium/darker colors for the foreground and background, click on Paintbrush > Airbrush and change your settings as follows:
Shape = Round
Size = 15
Hardness = 100
Step = 10
Density = 50
Thickness = 100
Rotation = 0
Opacity = 50
Rate = 50
Blend Mode = Normal
14. Paint a few lines of each color, being sure to leave gaps inside the circle selection. (If you have deselected it, go to Selections > Load/Save selections > Load from Alpha Channel, and reload the selection.)
15. Select the smudge tool and change the settings as follows:
Shape = Round
Size = 40
Step = 10
Density = 100
Thickness = 100
Opacity = 50
Rotation = 0
Sample merged = NOT Checked
Smear the colors around so that they nearly cover the empty areas, but not quite.
16. Changing the background color to white (255,255,255)
17. Layers > New Raster Layer
18. Layers > Arrange > Send to Bottom.
19. On the new bottom layer, add more of the foreground color and the white just like on the “Fill” layer. Use the same settings with the Airbrush as before.
20. Smudge the new bottom layer with the same settings.
21. Unhide all layers by clicking the eye icons
22. Layers > Merge > Merge Visible.
23. Finally now you can deselect the circle and save as a PNG file.
That’s all there is to it, we are done!
